The 2022 baseball season got underway for the Dodge City Conquistadors on Friday as they hosted a KJCCC East Division team in Highland for a doubleheader and first-year Head Coach,
Brett Doe and his guys earned a pair of wins 4-3 and 5-1.
Game 1 – Won 4-3 vs Highland
It was a tight battle early as both the Conquistadors and Highland Scotties starting pitching was stout, with
Adam Walker dialed in for the Conqs. The scoring opened in the bottom of the fifth as the Conqs as
Weston Symes led the inning off with a triple and a groundout by
Camden Thrailkill would bring him in for a 1-0 Dodge City lead. Highland managed to tie the game with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Conqs responded as they worked the bases loaded on three walks and
Caden Matlon then hit a line drive triple to center field to clear the bases and make it 4-1. Highland made a late push with two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Conqs held on for the 4-3 win.
It was the pitching of Walker that highlighted the game as he tossed five innings of action surrendering no runs on three hits and one walk while striking out 12 getting a no-decision. Offensively, Matlon highlighted the game for the Conqs finishing 1-3 with a triple and three RBI, while Symes,
Jake Miller, and
Aidan Proctor each had a hit.
Game 2 – Won 5-1 vs Highland
Starting pitching was once again phenomenal for the Conqs in game two against Highland and the offense found ways to be successful, as well. Conqs started the scoring early plating a run in the bottom of the first inning after
James Dunlap reached on an error and then Symes would bring him in on an RBI single. Highland like in game one would tie the game up at 1-1 as they scored a run in the top of the third but in the bottom of the fourth, the Conqs scratched another run across the plate and added another in the fifth on a
Carson Wright RBI double and two more in the sixth going to claim the 5-1 win.
Shea Walker was expectational on the mound tossing six innings to earn the win giving up just one run on two hits and a hit batter while striking out seven and earned the win only tossing 73 pitches. At the plate, Wright finished 2-3 with a double and RBI, while Proctor was 2-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
