Dodge City men's basketball hit the road again this season this time to open Jayhawk Conference play on Saturday as they took on Cowley and the Conquistadors picked up a 64-60 road win.
Head Coach, Brad Witherspoon wins his KJCCC coaching debut as the Conqs open KJCCC play 1-0 and improve to 5-1 on the season. The win also marks the first time since 2016 (December 10th, 2016) that the Conqs earned a win over the Tigers in Arkansas City.
Back-and-forth throughout the first half with both teams struggling to get into a groove offensively leading to a low-scoring first half. The Conqs however late in the first half found a way to capitalize on some Cowley turnovers and push ahead going up by as many as nine points and led 35-28 at intermission. In the second half, the Conqs would see Cowley push back and snag the lead at 40-38 utilizing a 10-0 run. Cowley would maintain the lead until 1:56 left in the contest when Cam Malray drained a bucket to give the Conqs a 58-57 lead. The Conqs would see Cowley tie the game up at 60-60 and then call a timeout to set up a play in which Shawn Warrior scored a layup on an assist from DJ Jones with 10 seconds remaining. Cowley then proceeds to turn over the ball and foul leading to Jason Edwards draining a pair of free throws to seal the 64-60 road win.
The Conqs would shoot just 34.3% from the floor but capitalize on opportunities as they held Cowley to 37.1% shooting.
Edwards continues to ball out for the Conqs as he paced the team in his first start dropping a career-high 23 points on 7-18 shooting and was a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line. Malray chipped in 13 points on 6-10 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Both Warrior and Jacobi Sebock each had eight points and eight rebounds.
The Conqs are back at home on Tuesday, November 22nd as they host Coffeyville for KJCCC action at 7:30 pm.
