Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker On the Road Against #15 Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa

Dodge City Community College men's soccer team hit the road for a non-conference showdown against #15 Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa and suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss in what was a battle down to the wire.

A stalemate the first 20 minutes of action it was the home team Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa Mavericks breaking through first in the 20th minute to make it a 1-0 lead. The Conquistadors would not be rattled as they answered on a free kick in the 27th minute by Elia Atay that found its way to the back of the net to even the contest at 1-1 and the contest would head into halftime tied at one goal apiece.

The Conqs pounced first in the second half to snag a 2-1 lead as Yanis Andale Smeg got an opportunity on a rebound from a save from the Mavericks and Smeg notched his first goal of the season in the 69th minute. Mavericks would spray in a pair of goals in a short window to tie the match and regain the lead as they scored the pair within less than a minute of each other in the 75th and 76th minutes making it 3-2.

Still, plenty of time left the Conqs kept up their pursuit and it paid off as Atay tallied his second goal of the contest with the assist from Smeg to make it 3-3 with just under three minutes remaining. Mavericks made a push at the end of regulation and garnered a penalty kick in the final 20 seconds of the match which they were able to convert into the game-winning goal and hand the Conqs a tough 4-3 loss.

The loss drops the Conqs to 1-1 on the season as they now focus on Conference play as they will open up KJCCC action on the road at Cowley on Wednesday, September 8th at 3:00 pm.Â
