Big Plays Doom Conquistadors in 70-14 Loss to #1 Hutchinson

The Dodge City Conquistadors traveled to Hutchinson, Kansas to take on the #1 ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons on Sunday afternoon.

Hutchinson scored off a 78-yard touchdown pass on their first play from scrimmage and didn't look back as big plays were plentiful for a Blue Dragon offense averaging 47.7 points per game, good for second in the country. The home team scored six touchdowns of over 50-yards on their way to a 70-14 defeat of the visiting Conquistadors.

Every phase of the game was clicking for the number one ranked team in the country, scoring five passing touchdowns, three rushing touchdowns, a scoop-and-score fumble recovery, and an 83-yard kickoff return touchdown.

The Conquistadors pressed the Blue Dragon defense with a drive to end the first half that was stuffed on a 4thand goal from the Hutchinson 9-yard line. However, Dodge City was finally able to get on the board early in the 3rd quarter. After Kevonta Fanning forced a Blue Dragon fumble, the Conquistadors recovered at the Hutchinson 13-yard line. Rashad McKee threw a touchdown pass to Terrance Johnson from 14-yards out two plays later to make the score 49-7. Hutchinson responded by promptly returning the ensuing kickoff 83-yards for a touchdown.

Dodge City wouldn't find the end zone again until late in the fourth quarter when Jase Orndorff, playing in relief of McKee, found Ty'Javien Edwards from 12-yards out in the end zone to finalize the scoring at 70-14.

The Conquistador offense found success moving the ball but couldn't capitalize on some big play opportunities early to keep pace with the high octane Hutchinson offense. The Conqs put out 350 yards of total offense led by CJ Hall's 116 yards rushing on 16 carries. It was the Conquistador receiving core who scored the teams only two touchdowns when Edwards (three receptions, 27 yards) and Johnson (two receptions, 20 yards) each found pay dirt but it was Tristan Jones who led the group in yards with 49 off of three receptions.

Anthony Quinney (seven tackles) and Brendan Hardy (six tackles) led a Conquistador defense who surrendered 610 yards of total offense on just 44 plays for an average of 13.9 yards per play. Dav'Juan Dezeme and Kevonta Fanning were both responsible for two tackles and a forced fumble a piece, with Fanning's forced fumble leading to the only Blue Dragon turnover of the day.

The Blue Dragons improve to 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in conference play as their regular season is completed.

The Conquistadors fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-5 in KJCCC play. They will complete their regular season next week on May 23rd with a trip to Highland, Kansas to take on the Highland Community College Scotties at 1:00 pm.
