Conquistadors Explode for 5 Goals in Rout of Garden City

Maria Macedo put in a goal and had three assists as the Conquistador women's soccer team put away the Garden City Broncbusters 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

The Conquistador attack pushed the Broncbuster defense early and often in the first half. Macedo found Renica Beauplan just over five minutes into the match with a chip pass and, after struggling to coral the ball, held off on her attempt to find Tate Cuffy who was able to rip a goal from 15-yards out into the net for a 1-0 Conquistador lead.

Just under seven minutes later, Macedo stole the ball from the Broncbuster attack and quickly put a pass up the pitch to Treasher Valcin who scored easily to give the Conqs a 2-0 lead with 37:21 remaining in the 1st half.

Garden City wasn't able to put any real pressure on the Conquistador defense until 20-minutes into the match, but the Dodge City defense denied the Broncbusters a shot attempt, turning it into a counter attack of their own. It was Macedo who was on the receiving end of the pass this time after a simple kick up the middle by Sophia Martinez led to a Maria Macedo runout and subsequent goal with 23:10 left in the 1st half to give the Conqs a 3-0 lead.

Dodge City would score their final goal of the half with 14:00 minutes remaining. Macedo put a beautiful through pass to Hannah Marshall who was able to sprint behind the Broncbuster defense and get one-on-one with the keeper who was left on an island.

Garden City wouldn't put pressure on Dodge City's Ane Garcia de Vicuna until Miranda Cardona was able to get two shots out late in the first half. The first sailed wide right of the goal and the second settled right into Garcia de Vicuna's chest. The freshman from Bilbao, Spain finished with five saves on the day for her first victory and shutout of her career.

The Conquistadors came out of halftime trying to run the clock out, but would score their fifth and final goal of the game with 28:30 left after Treasher Valcin scored her second goal of the game off Macedo's third assist of the contest.

The victory extends an 8-match winning streak over the Broncbusters program and the five goals are the most for the Conquistador women's soccer program since a 7-0 victory over Hesston in 2018.The win is also the first in the career of interim head coach Brian Bounds.

After missing the first two matches of the year, the two goals bring Valcin's total up to three in three games played as the Conquistadors score their first win of the season to move to 1-4. They are back in action against Johnson County Community College on Saturday at 12:00 pm in Overland Park, Kansas.
