Conquistadors Play to a Draw with Garden City

The Dodge City Conquistadors men's soccer team faced off with the Garden City Broncbusters on Wednesday evening, playing to a 1-1 draw.

Juan Sebastian-Sanchez broke a 0-0 tie in the 28th minute after corralling a pass with his right foot in the air from teammate Mohamed Diarra and one-timing a rocket with his left from 30-yards out to give Garden City a 1-0 lead.

The assist was Diarra's first of the season after joining the men's soccer program following the completion of his freshman season as a starter for the Garden City men's basketball program.

The Conquistadors thought they had the equalizer in the 36th minute after Kevin Enriquez Leon put a beautiful cross into the air that found Rei Toyoda's head before it hit the back of the net, but Toyoda was called offsides and the match went into halftime at 0-0.

Dodge City continued to push the issue but the Garden City defense was able to thwart any Conquistador scoring opportunities until the Conqs found their equalizer in the 60th minute. Jeremie Briquet ripped a shot on goal that was stopped by the Broncbuster keeper but the ball fell perfectly to the right foot of Christopher Quijanos who emphatically tied the match at 1-1.

The two teams played even up the rest of the half with both keepers making critical saves.

The excellent keeper play carried into extra time where the two teams combined for five shots on goal with neither being able to convert. The Conquistador's Nathan O'Brien accounted for three of those but couldn't get the game winner. The Broncbusters' Diarra, who stands at 6 feet 10 inches tall, had a header attempt sail wide right late in extra time and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Conquistador goal keeper, Marco Galardini recorded seven saves on the evening. Quijanos' goal was his second of the season.

Dodge City improves to 0-3-1 on the year as Garden City falls to 0-5-1 in KJCCC play. The Conquistadors are back in action on April 24th when they travel to Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas with the women for a doubleheader. The women's game kicks off the afternoon at 12:00 pm with the men's game to follow.
