Conquistadors Pick Up Two Conference Victories in Split Series with Pratt
Â
The Dodge City Community College baseball team took on the Pratt Beavers in a four-game series this weekend. The two teams split a pair of games in Pratt on Thursday, April 15th then returned to Cavalier Field only to finish the series with another pair of split games.
Â
The Conquistadors opened the series with an 11-inning marathon victory that lasted right around three and a half hours. In what was slated to be a 7-inning game, Pratt scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th to eliminate Dodge City's 6-4 lead, tying the game at 6-6, extending the game in the process. The score remained at 6-6 until a Noah Thompson leadoff home run to open the 11th inning became the deciding factor after the Conquistadors were able to keep the Beaver offense at bay in the bottom of the 11th.
Â
The Beaver bats woke up an inning too late, opening game two of the day with five runs in the 1st inning of game two. The Conquistadors responded with four of their own in the 3rd to pull within one at 5-4 until Pratt brought four more across home plate in the 3rd to take a 9-4 lead. The Beavers would only score one more run, but the Conquistadors didn't have a rally left in the tank as Pratt salvaged a split on the day, winning 10-7.
Â
Hunter Mosely picked up the win in game one for the Conquistadors, going 5.0 IP with four hits, zero earned runs and five strikeouts, improving his record to 1-1 on the season. Mathis Mauldin received credit for the loss in game two with his 2.0 IP. Despite not giving up a hit, Mauldin was responsible for four earned runs thanks to five walked batters. His record falls to 1-3 on the year.
Â
The two teams continued their series at Cavalier Field in Dodge City on Saturday, April 17th. Game one proved to be a pitchers' duel with both defenses holding their opponent scoreless through five innings of play. Pratt opened up the scoring with two runs in the 6th while the Conqs could only manage one. Pratt put two more across home plate in the 7th. The Conquistadors were able bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 7th but couldn't produce any runs and they fell 4-1.
Â
Game two saw the Conqs take an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd only to have the Beavers take a 3-1 lead after three innings of play. They would hold their lead until the Conquistadors were able to score two in the 8th to take a 5-4 lead. The Conquistador bullpen held the Beavers scoreless over the final five frames to help Dodge City stay in the game and ultimately preserve their 5-4, 9-inning victory.
Â
Tanner Eyre went the distance in game one on Saturday, picking up the loss and moving his record to 2-5 on the year. He went the full 7.0 IP, gave up seven hits, four earned runs, and struck out six. Walker Greenlee and Dimitri Stamatopoulos pitched in relief for the starter Tristan Wolf in game two, combining for only three hits and five strikeouts over the final five scoreless innings. Greenlee received credit for the victory, improving his record to 2-0.
Â
The Conquistadors improve their record to 17-18 on the season and 4-16 in KJCCC play. The game one victory on Thursday snapped a 13-game KJCCC losing streak. They take a break from conference play with a road doubleheader against Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colorado on April 20th.
