Conqs Blanked in Doubleheader Loss to #4 Butler
Monday's softball doubleheader at Legends Park between the Dodge City Conquistadors and the fourth ranked Butler Grizzlies belonged entirely to the Grizzlies as they won the two games 15-0 and 7-0, respectively.
Game one was all Butler from the very first inning. Conquistador starter Makayla Kolojay found herself with the bases loaded and zero outs. After a hit batter scored the first run, Kolojay was able to strike out a Grizzly hitter but walked in another run to make the score 2-0. In the very next at bat, the Grizzlies hit a grand slam to open up the scoring at 6-0 before the Conqs were able to record the last two outs of the inning.
The Butler offense continued to roll, scoring two runs each in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings and three in the 5th to bring their total to 15 runs while holding the Conquistadors scoreless.
The Grizzly pitching staff strung together a no-hitter in game one, only allowing two Conquistador batters to reach base, off an error and a hit-by-pitch, as they took the contest 15-0.
Despite getting shutout in game two 7-0 by a Butler team who is steamrolling the KJCCC, the Conquistadors saw plenty more positives to use moving forward.
The Conquistadors took the Grizzlies the full seven innings, which is just the fourth time in 16 outings that Butler has played a full game in KJCCC play and just the 11th time in 33 total games played. The Conq defense also held a Butler team averaging over 12 runs a game to just seven runs.
The losses move Dodge City to 11-13 on the season and 6-8 in KJCCC play. Butler improves to 31-2 and 16-0 in conference play. The Conquistadors are back in action on Thursday, April 15th at home for a doubleheader against the Barton Cougars. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
