Conqs Dig Too Deep a Hole, Fall to Barton on the Road

The Dodge City Community College men's basketball team took on the Barton Cougars on Wednesday night in Great Bend, losing 100-92.

The Conquistadors did not get off to a pretty start Wednesday night, facing a Barton Cougars team vying for the 2^nd seed in the KJCCC West in the Region VI playoffs. The Cougars were on fire in the first 20 minutes, knocking down 12 three pointers and seeing their lead climb as high as 28-points at 52-24 with 3:42 remaining in the 1^st half. Dhieu Deing and Quindarius Thomas knocked down two three's each over the rest of the half to help make the deficit more manageable at 60-39 at halftime.

Dodge City slowly chipped away at the Cougar lead in the 2^nd half, cutting the deficit to single digits with 3:23 remaining off another one of Deing's five three-pointers in the contest. They were able to pull within five at 88-83 with 1:51 remaining, but a missed Emmanuel Jones three stopped them from making the contest a one possession game.

Deing's 5^th three of the night made the score 96-92 with 0:18 seconds left but that's all the Conqs could muster as Barton knocked down 23-27 free throws for the game with many of them coming down the stretch on their way to a 100-92 victory.

"All credit goes to Barton in this one," said head coach Jake Williams. "Our focus is entirely shifted to Allen. We have to be tougher and play for 40 minutes if we don't want our season to end Monday night."

Dodge City was led by Dhieu Deing's 32 points, including a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line. The Conquistadors as a team were 22-26 (84.6%) from the free throw line, their best performance of the year. Point guard Walyn Napper also added 24 points, five rebounds, and six assists as the only other Conquistador in double figures. Playing without standout center Mike Marsh for the second consecutive game, Marlow Gilmore Jr. tried to pick up the slack inside, chipping in eight points and nine rebounds.

Barton was led by their sophomore trio of Justin Harmon (23 points, five assists), Jaheim Holden (21 points, eight assists, six rebounds), and Desean Munson (18 points, 16 rebounds). Asanti Price chipped in 12 points off 4-10 from three in the game.

The loss moves Dodge City into the three-seed out of the KJCCC West and Barton into the second slot. Dodge City will now host the Allen Red Devils in opening round play of the Region VI tournament at 7:00 pm on April 5^th in the Student Activity Center.
