Conqs Drop Four Straight in Weekend Series with Barton
The Dodge City Community College baseball team took on the Barton Cougars for a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, losing all four over the weekend.
The Conquistadors traveled to Great Bend to take on Barton on Saturday, March 27th. They lost game one 8-5 as a five-run 7th inning rally fell short and dropped game two by a score of 9-3.
On Sunday, Barton returned the favor by coming to Cavalier Field for a doubleheader. The Cougars took game one 10-6 in extra innings and game two 18-4.
The late innings gave the Conquistadors fits on Sunday. Tied 5-5 heading into the top of the 8th, the Cougars scored five runs to take a commanding 10-5 lead. The Conquistadors could only muster one run in response, dropping game one. In game two, the usually potent Conquistador offense was in striking distance down 5-2 heading into the 6th inning. Barton proceeded to score six runs in the 6th and seven runs in the 7th to take a commanding 18-2 lead. The Conqs couldn't put together a 16-run rally as they only scored two runs to lose 18-4.
"At the end of the day, we just got outplayed this weekend," said head coach Phil Stephenson. "We got outplayed in every facet of the game, so we have to figure out a way to make that doesn't happen again. The beauty of the game of baseball is that we get a chance to figure it out Monday in a nonconference game before we take on Seward in a four-game series this weekend."
Kory Schmidt, Trevor Blackwell, and Joe Daneff all led the way for the Conquistador offense, each going 5-12 over the course of the four games. Daneff added a home run and five RBIs. Noah Thompson and Seth Ochoa each hit solo home runs as well. Despite only seeing seven atbats, Cale Blasi procuded a 3-7 statline that included four RBIs. Ashton Jenkins (1-2), Tanner Eyre (2-2), Mathis Mauldin (1-2), and Jace Notbohm (0-1) each picked up losses on the mound for the weekend.
Dodge City is back in action on Monday, March 29th when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State University's JV team to town for a 9-inning game starting at 2:00 pm at Cavalier Field. They get back to KJCCC play on Thursday, April 1st when they host the Seward County Saints for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm at Cavalier Field.
