Coach Smith Gets 700 and 701^st Victories in Sweep of Pratt Beavers

The Dodge City Community College softball team welcomed the Pratt Beavers to Legends Park for a Saturday afternoon double header, sending them home with two more losses than they came with in the process.

The Conquistadors took game one behind Makayla Kolojay's complete game by a score of 8-2. They turned around to win game two thanks to a three-run sixth inning rally.

"It was a great effort from our pitching staff of Mak [Kolojay] and DK [Danika Utajara], along with our catchers Mady [Madyson McCage] and KB [KarliAnn Bauer]. Our defense held up tough on a really windy day," said head coach Howie Smith. "We followed the game plan from the pitching side of the game to a 'T.' I'm very proud of the kids to come through and answer after Pratt scored their two runs late in each game. We had a couple of big-time hits with two outs to help seal it."

As bashful as head coach Howie Smith might be, it was an extra special day as coach Smith picked up his 700^th and 701^st wins of his career. Smith is in his 30^th season as the head coach of the Dodge City Community College Conquistador softball program and his 35^th season at the college overall. He's the owner of three KJCCC conference championships, two region VI Championships, and two trips to the NJCAA Softball World Series, including a 4^th place finish in 2000. Now he is the proud owner of over 700 career victories as a head coach at the NJCAA level.

Game One | 8-2 W
The Conquistadors got out to a hot start, scoring two runs in the 1^st inning and one in the 2^nd inning to take a quick 3-0 lead.

The two teams would remain scoreless until the Pratt Beavers cut the Conquistador lead to one with a two-run 5^th inning. Dodge City extended their lead with a lone run in the 5^thbut opened the game up with a four-run 6^thinning to all but end the game.

Caroline Stephenson brought a runner in after reaching base on an error by the centerfielder. Makayla Kolojay scored two with a double to center field, and Destiny Saldivar brought Kolojay home with a single to center field to push the Conquistador lead to 8-2.

Kolojay went the full 7.0 innings, giving up six hits and four walks with zero earned runs and nine strikeouts in the process. She had herself a day as a hitter as well, leading the Conquistadors with her 2-4 outing with two doubles and two RBIs.

Game Two | 5-2 W
After 3.5 scoreless innings, a Danika Utajara sacrifice fly scored AJ Poell for the game's first run. Daysha Mendez homered to centerfield in the same inning as the Conquistadors took a 2-0 lead heading into the 5^th.

The Beavers put the pressure on when they tied the game on a two-run homer in the top of the 6^th inning.

Dodge City responded accordingly with a three-run 6^th inning to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Mendez brought in another RBI with a single to right field. Destiny Saldivar scored two more with a ground ball to centerfield.

The strong pitching of Danika Utajara closed out the contest, giving the Conqs the 5-2 victory. Utajara finished with a complete game, giving up four hits, two earned runs, and striking out three.

Offensively, it was Daysha Mendez' 2-2 day with two RBIs and two runs scored that paced the Conquistadors.

Dodge City moves to 8-4 on the season and 3-1 in KJCCC play. They sit just 0.5 game back from Garden City who is 5-1 and in first place. Pratt falls to 4-21 and 0-4 in KJCCC play.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Thursday, May 25^th when they travel to Goodland, KS to take on the Northwest Kansas Tech Mavericks. The double header is the first of a six-game road stint for the Conqs.
