Balanced Cougar Offense Capitalizes on Conquistador Turnovers for Victory

The Dodge City Conquistador women's basketball team dropped a home conference game to the Barton Cougars by a score of 87-61 on Saturday afternoon in the Student Activity Center.

Opening the game on a 10-2 run, the Cougars used their high-speed style of play to get out and run on the Conqs, expanding their lead each quarter.

After being down 18-11 at the end of the first quarter, the Conquistadors pulled within four at 18-14 off an Emery Maze three-pointer to open the second quarter. That's the closest the Conqs would get after Barton responded with an 11-2 run to take a 29-16 lead.

Barton would maintain that 13-point lead most of the second quarter and led 46-33 at the half.

The Cougars maintained a double-digit lead for the entirety of the second half, seeing their lead grow as large as 31-points in the fourth quarter as they cruised to an 87-61 victory.

"We have to come out and be ready to play defense," said head coach Zach Loll. "We can't have lapses like we did. We did a better job of taking care of the ball and that will have to translate to Monday's game against Hutch."

Despite Dodge City turning it over only 15 times, four shy of their average on the season, the Cougars made them count as they scored 18-points off those turnovers. Barton's transition offense was clicking as they had a 26-4 advantage in fast break points.

The Conquistadors were led by Emery Maze's 11 points, including 3-6 beyond the arc. Outside of Maze, it was a balance attack for the Conquistador offense as they saw 11 other players get into the scoring column. Madison Gissendanner once again led the Conquistadors in rebounding with seven.

Barton was led by their trio of Queen Ulabo (24 points, 12 rebounds), Vanessa Oduah (21 points, eight rebounds, five assists), and Tiffany Dortland (13 points, five rebounds, four assists). Brennan Kirchhoff came off the bench to chip in 10 points, four rebounds, and seven assists in a balanced Cougar offensive attack.

Dodge City falls to 4-11 on the year and 3-11 in KJCCC play while Barton improves to 10-3 in conference play and 11-3 overall.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Monday, March 15th when they take part in a dual-sport, triple header with the Hutchinson Blue Dragons at the Student Activity Center. The volleyball program kicks off the afternoon with a 3:00 pm CST match with the Blue Dragons. They are followed by women's basketball at 5:30 pm and men's basketball at 7:30 pm. Tickets for the volleyball and basketball games must be bought separately as the Student Activity Center will be cleared for sanitizing purposes in between the volleyball match and the women's basketball game. Fans are welcome and tickets can be purchased here.
