Conquistador Softball Splits Conference Opening Doubleheader

The Dodge City Community College softball program opened up KJCCC play March 11th at Legends Park with a doubleheader against the Colby Trojans, splitting the two contests.

The Trojans took game one by a score of 12-8 as a 7th inning Conquistador rally fell short. The Conqs bounced back to take game two 6-2 for an even split on the day.

"It was the same song and same verse as the past two doubleheaders," said head coach Howie Smith. "We struggle driving in runs with runners in scoring position, lose the first game, come back in the 2nd game, pitch beautifully, make some great defensive plays and score enough runs to win. It is the old saying, 'is the glass half full, or half empty?' I look at it that the glass is half full.  I feel that we are pressing at the plate when we have runners in scoring position since we practice and talk about it so much.  We have to do a better job of knocking in runs when we have the chance, and it seems as though we have opportunities in the first game, but right now, do not take advantage of it."

Game One | 12-8 L

The Trojans meticulously took game one, scoring at least one run in every inning except the 3rd.

The teams traded runs in the first inning but Colby took the lead for good off the strength of a two-run double in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Dodge City's bats didn't quite wake up until it was too late. Down 10-2, the Conquistadors scored three runs in the 6th to push the score to 10-5 but proceeded to give up two more runs in the 7th to extend their deficit to 12-5.

The home team looked alive with three more runs in the 7th but their rally would fall short after Danika Utajara popped out in foul territory to end the game.

Makayla Kolojay got the start in game one, going 5.1 innings and giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts. Kalei Villegas led the way for the Conquistador offense going 2-4 with one RBI while scoring three runs. AJ Poell also went 2-4 with three RBIs as the only Conquistador with multiple runs batted in.

Game Two | 6-2 W

With reigning NJCAA Pitcher of the Week, Danika Utajara on the mound for game two, the Conquistadors bounced back to take a 6-2 victory. Utajara went 6.0 innings before Kolojay took over in relief. Utajara finished with five strikeouts while only giving up four hits, one earned run, and one walk. Utajara got the win with Kolojay getting credit for the save.

The Trojans struck first again with a lone run in the first inning, but the Conquistadors took the lead scoring two runs in the first after an AJ Poell double to score Daysha Mendez was followed by a Utajara groundout to bring Poell home.

Colby tied the contest with a second inning run, but the Conquistadors took the lead for good and finished the scoring with a four-run 3rd inning. The Conq defense held firm in the last four innings as they came out victorious.

The Conqs scored their six runs on only five hits, thanks to a collection of stolen bases and walks by the Trojan pitching staff. AJ Poell led the offense once again with a 1-2 outing, scoring two runs and one RBI. Daysha Mendez stole two bases for the Conquistadors.

Dodge City is back in action on Tuesday, March 16th when they host Lamar Community College for a nonconference doubleheader at Legends Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm CST and fans are welcome.
