A Tale of Two Bats Leads Conqs to Split KJCCC Opening Series

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for the Conquistador baseball program as they went up to Colby, Kansas and left with a 1-1 record on the day against the Colby Trojans.

Despite the aggregate score being 12-1, the Conquistadors waited a little too long to wake up their bats, losing game one 1-0 and winning game two 12-0.

"I thought we pitched it well all day," said head coach Phil Stephenson. "Their guy on the mound was really good in game one, but our guys bounced back well to go get a road split. We have to continue to pitch it well and grind out at bats against this good Colby team this weekend."

Game One | 1-0 L

Contrary to what the Conquistadors have shown all season, game one of their KJCCC season proved to be a pitchers' duel as Tanner Eyre of the Conqs and Alex Cook of the Trojans both went the distance in game one. Eyre pitched a beauty, going 6.0 innings, striking out eight and only giving up five hits and one earned run.

It was that lone run, a 6th inning solo shot by Colby's Jake Ticer that proved to be the difference in the game. Cook went the full 7.0 innings, striking out the Conqs 15 times in the process. Cook had a no-hitter going into the 7th inning until Cale Blasi broke it up in the 7th inning with a single.

Despite the solid outing, Eyre is credited with the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season.

Game Two | 12-0 W

Game two provided more what Conquistador fans are used to as Dodge City run ruled the Trojans with a five-run 8th inning to make the score 12-0.

The Conquistadors proved they can play some defense in the process. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, scoring one run in the 1st and four in the 3rd, the Conqs saw the Trojans load the bases with only one out in both the 4th and 5th innings.

On both occasions it was sophomore Luke Smith who tightened up his cleats and helped the Conqs escape both innings unscathed.

Two runs in the 7th and five more in the 8th led to the game's final score of 12-0, inciting a run rule of a team gaining a 10-run advantage after seven innings of play.

Jake Miller led the way for the Conq offense, despite only going 1-3 as his one hit brought cleared a bases loaded situation and gave him three RBIs. Fresh off his NJCAA Player of the Week nod, Kory Schmidt hit well going 2-4 with a walk, scored twice and brought in one RBI. Justin Dunlap added to the scoreboard with a standup double in the 3rd that brought in his only two RBIs.

Mathis Mauldin got the start for the Conqs, going 4.2 innings while giving up zero hits and collecting eight strikeouts. Five walks and four batters hit prompted the Conquistador coaching staff to go to Luke Smith, who was credited with the win, in relief. Smith went the final 3.1 innings, only giving up one hit and striking out four as he moves to 2-0 on the season.

Dodge City moves to 8-2 on the season and 1-1 in KJCCC play. Colby falls to 3-8 as they also sit at 1-1 in conference play.

The Conquistadors were scheduled to be back in action on March 12th at Cavalier Field against Colby, but the game was postponed due to impending weather. The two sides are attempting to produce a makeup date again this weekend or early next week, so stay tuned to Conquistador social media for any schedule updates.
