Napper's Career Night Powers Conqs to a Road Victory

Walyn Napper, the reigning KJCCC Player of the Week, wasn't going to let the men's Conquistador program drop out of the national rankings as quickly as they jumped into them.

Napper was putting pressure on the Cloud County defense all night on his way to a game and career-high of 33 points for the 16th ranked Conquistadors.

After a back and forth first half that featured six lead changes in the first 15 minutes of play, the sophomore point guard hit a driving floater which gave the Conquistadors a 25-24 advantage with 4:50 to play in the half.

The Conquistadors would go on a 16-8 run the remaining 4:50 of the half that was then capped by a Napper layup with four seconds left to put the Conqs ahead by seven heading into halftime with a score of 39-32.

While there would be no more lead changes the rest of the way, each time it looked like the Conqs were poised to pull away, the home team was able to hit a big shot. The Conquistadors held eight separate double-digit leads in the second half, only to have each one eliminated.

Sophomores Dylean Reed and Savian Edwards were the usual suspects as the pair combined for 7-11 from beyond the arc in the second half.

"I'm proud of our team for winning on the road when our shots weren't falling," said head coach Jake Williams.  "Our defense created 26 turnovers, but we almost gave them all back giving up 19 offensive rebounds. We have to make sure we don't beat ourselves moving forward, especially against a dangerous team like that."

The shots weren't falling like they're used to but the Conquistadors were able to ramp up the defensive pressure to turn 26 Cloud County turnovers into 28 points. Napper's ability to get to the rim propelled the Conqs to 58 points in the paint. However, Cloud hit the glass on their end hard as the T-Birds converted their 19 offensive rebounds into 22 second chance points.

Napper continues to showcase his all-around game as he added five rebounds, four assists, and five steals to his 33 points. Despite a poor shooting night, Dhieu Deing was able to get to the free throw line and add in 13 points and five rebounds, albeit short of his 20.3 point per game average. Freshman Ourmar Koureissi contributed 12 points off the bench and showcased his length while giving fits to the Cloud County guards at the top of the Conquistador press. Sophomores Mike Marsh and Marlow Gilmore Jr. continue to be forces inside as the pair combined for 17 points and 15 rebounds.

The T-Birds were led by the sharpshooting of Dyelan Reed as contributed 24 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. The sophomore poured in six triples on the evening. Four other players scored in double-figures for the T-Birds but were led by Detavius Frierson's 16 points and nine rebounds to go with Zavien Smith's 10 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds.

The Conquistadors move to 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in KJCCC play while the T-Birds fall to 3-2 and 1-2.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Saturday, February 6th as they welcome the Independence Pirates in a conference double-header. The day will begin with the women's game tipping off at 1:00 pm CST, and the men immediately following. A conference vote on Monday, February 1st gave KJCCC schools the opportunity to allow fans at 25% capacity. Stay tuned to our social media for updates but both contests will still be live streamed on ConqTV!
