Conquistador Softball Starts Season in Dominating Fashion

Conquistador Softball Starts Season in Dominating Fashion
 
After COVID-19 provided a disappointing ending to a promising young season for the Conquistador softball program, who was off to a 10-4 and averaging over 10 runs per contest, they wasted no time waking up their bats as they swept the North Platte Community College Knights in a two-game series to open their season by a combined score of 17-3.
 
The Conquistadors won game one by a score of 7-0 and game two by a score of 10-3.
 
"I could not be happier for this group and the way they played yesterday," said head coach Howie Smith. "It was a complete team effort in all three phases [offense, defense, and pitching] of the game for us. You never know as a coach how that first game of the year is going to go, but I thought our kids answered the bell as well as we could have expected."
 
Game One: 7-0 W
 
Makayla Garcia got the scoring started for the 2021 campaign in a big way with a solo home run to right field off the first pitch in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Looking to build some momentum, the Conquistadors kept the offense rolling into the bottom of the 4th, despite waiting for two outs to do so. After back-to-back right field singles by Destiny Saldivar and KarliAnn Bauer, Caroline Stephenson stepped up to the plate and made her lone hit of the afternoon count as she smacked a double to left field, scoring two runs.
 
The flood gates finally opened in the 5th for the Conqs as Olivia Ortiz scored on an AJ Poell double followed by Poell scoring on a Destiny Saldivar single. After a couple sacrifices to advance runners, KarliAnn Bauer stepped up with a 2-RBI double to round out the scoring for the day.
 
Freshman Danika Utajara got the first start of her college career and threw a gem to the tune of a complete game shutout. Utajara struck out eight and gave up seven hits. She also added a 2-4 outing at the plate with one RBI for good measure.
 
Game Two: 10-3 W
 
Sophomore ace Makayla Kolojay got the start on the mound in the second contest for the Conqs. Kolojay and the Conquistador defense got off to a slow start, giving up two runs in the top of the 1st but quickly regained form. Kolojay would go the distance giving up only four hits and striking out eight.
 
With the score stuck at 2-0, the Conquistador bats came alive once again as the offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning. Spearheaded by a Destiny Saldivar moon-shot that scored two runs, the Conquistadors meticulously worked their way into seven runs to all but put the game away. Seven different Conquistadors scored in ways ranging from the Saldivar home run to AJ Poell's steal of home plate early in the inning.
 
Olivia Ortiz and AJ Poell each scored two runs for the game, going 2-4 and 1-2 respectively. Saldivar's home run was the first of what will likely be many for the Conquistadors this season as her power at the plate was evident as she went 2-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored for the day.
 
The Conquistadors are back in action on Sunday, February 28th as they host Hesston College in a double-header at Legends Park. Game one is slated to begin at 2:00 pm CST.
