For the second straight day it didn't come easy but the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team picked up a victory as they beat Ranger College 51-47 in the final game of the Midland Classic in Texas.
The victory gave the Conquistadors a 2-1 road trip in Texas and improved them to 4-1 overall on the season.
It was a slow start on the day for the Conqs as Ranger went up 5-0 and fell behind by as many as nine points but pushed back to make it a 15-12 Ranger lead at the end of the first quarter. Ranger would continue to hold the lead over the Conqs until
Georgia Gray hit a bucket to tie the game at 21-21 with 3:15 left in the first half and then with just over two minutes left before halftime the Conqs saw
Jenna Rose Mafua drain a three-pointer to give Dodge City their first lead of the game at 23-21. Conqs ultimately outscored Ranger 15-8 in the second quarter to carry a 27-23 lead into halftime.
The third quarter would see the Conqs put together a 14-0 run in the latter portion of the frame and entering the fourth quarter Dodge City led 41-34 versus Ranger. Ranger would however not go away as they made push in the fourth and the Conqs would have to secure the game late holding on for the 51-47 victory.
Defensively the Conqs held Ranger to 34% shooting and forced 23 turnovers recording 17 steals.
Conqs were led by a double-double from
Bree Stephens as she had 11 points on 5-10 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds, while adding three steals. Mafua finished with nine points and four rebounds, while
Jada Burton,
Teona Pop Stojanova, and
Krystina Hagood each tallied six points. Hagood added four rebounds and six steals, while Burton had three assists and Pop Stojanova grabbed five rebounds.
It's a quick turnaround for the Conqs as the ladies will host Western Oklahoma State on Monday, November 15th at 7:00 pm to wrap up non-conference play.
