Baseball Sweeps Home Opener, Splits Series With Colby

In the Conquistadors' home opening double header, both team's offenses provided plenty of firepower. Both teams would combine for 13 home runs in the double header. The Conquistadors would notch two comeback wins on the day, taking game one by the score of 10-8 and game two by the score of 14-13 to sweep the day and split their opening KJCCC series with Colby.

Game 1
Colby would set the offensive theme of the day by scoring 3 runs in the top of the first inning by a solo home run from centerfielder Brayden Cust on the first pitch of the game, and a two run homer from Tucker Zdunich. The Conquistadors would respond by scoring a run in the bottom of the first after a Luke Smith strikeout, which lead to a Hector Carrillo rundown that would score Ryan Santos from third. Colby would score two runs in the third and fourth innings, but the Conquistadors would respond by scoring in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth inning. Trey Vasquez would start the scoring in the third after a double to right center that would score Santos, and a Luke Smith sac fly would drive in Vasquez. Cale Blasi would drive in Jaxon McCaw on a fielder's choice to star the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. That would be followed up on the next hitter, when Ethan Baptie's two run homer to right field would tie the game at 6-6. The bottom of the 5th would produce two more home runs, with Jake Miller and Blasi both hitting homers to left-center. Smith would drive in another run on a ground out to score Hector Carrillo to round out the scoring for Dodge.
Connor Kessler would earn the start and win for the Conquistadors on the mound. He would go 6 innings, allowing 4 earned runs, while striking out 8. Jace Notbohm would be on the mound for the 7th. He would work around a 2-run homer in the top of the seventh, but would shut the door with a strikeout to end the game at 10-8. The win would give Kessler his first win of 2020 on the mound.

Game 2
The night cap of the double header would produce both some wild swings and late game heroics. The Conquistadors started the scoring by plating 5 in the bottom of the first on only two hits. The Trojans would respond with 6 runs of their own in the top of the 2nd. Dodge would tie the game up in the bottom of the second with a Miller single to left. After a scoreless top of the third from the Trojans, Santos, Carrillo, and Miller would each hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to give Dodge a 9-6 lead. Kessler would follow up the solo homeruns in the third, by driving in a run in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice that would drive in Braden Dedrick. Colby would quickly close up the four run deficit with a run in the 5th, and tie the game up at 10-10 on a 3 run homerun. The Conquistadors would take a 12-10 lead in the bottom of the 7th after Miller singled home Kessler, and Justin Dunlap drove in Miller on a double in the left field corner. The Trojans would score two in the 8th and one in the 9th, but the Conquistadors had one more response. Kessler led the inning off with a single to right and Carrillo lifted a two strike pitch to left center for his second home run of the game, and would walk off the Trojans by the final score of 14-13.
Evan Nichols would start on the mound. He would take the no-decision on the day after throwing 5 innings, and striking out 3. Michael Bonaccorso would start the 6th inning, but would be relieved after 0.2 innings of work. He would finish his outing with 2 walks and 3 runs allowed. Hunter Moseley would throw the next 3 innings of work, allowing 1 earned run, and striking out 6. Manny Martinez would come in to finish off the 9th inning. His lone batter he faced would be a 3-pitch strikeout. He would go on to earn the win as the pitcher of record, and earn his first win of his Conquistador career.
