Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Conquistadors Down Cowley For HC Loll's 300th Win

(Dodge City, KS) Wednesday January 8th

The Conquistador Women were back on home court Wednesday night for the first time in the new year. They faced a tough welcome back challenge in the Cowley County Tigers, who sat atop the KJCCC East standings with a conference record of 4-2 and overall record of 14 wins and only 2 losses. Those only 2 losses coming from fellow KJCCC West opponents Seward County and Pratt. The game started promising for Conq starting forward Alana Busby-Dunphy making two solid post moves inside to make consecutive field goals. It was later in the first frame that she went down with a foot injury at the 4:50 mark and did not return to the game. Forward Sydney Thurwalker then proceeded to take over the game from there. The lead never got more than 3 points for Cowley in the first half and the Conqs lead at the break 17-15. The second half was much of the same with a mix of good ball control, interior scoring, and sharp shooting from beyond the arc. The second half lead for the Conqs would dwindle down to 1 point at times but Cowley never managed to take the lead in the second half and the Conqs ended up putting it away when Cowley came within 5 points with :47 seconds on the clock. Ashia Pool sealed the game with a steal with :34 seconds left and sinking one of two free-throws putting the Conqs up 8 with :29 seconds left, too little time for Cowley to mount a comeback.

With the win last night, Head Coach Zach Loll achieved a milestone in college coaching by getting his 300th career college coaching win (Kaskaskia, Wabash Valley, Dodge City). With :30 seconds on the clock in the 4th quarter, Coach Loll knew that win number 300 was guaranteed as he proceeded to exclaim, "300 BABY! 300 BABY!".

The Conqs improve to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play pulling them into a tie for second place in the West with Pratt behind 6-0 Hutchinson and Seward County.

Next Game: The Conqs host Coffeyville this Saturday in the Student Activity Center for their next KJCCC matchup. Game time is scheduled for 1:00PM.
