(Dodge City, KS) -- The Dodge City Community College Baseball team struggled in the two series' against Butler this week. They lost all four games, giving them an unlikely chance of getting into the Region VI tournament.
Cameron Fritz got the Conquistadors on the board early in game one with an RBI single. The bats would grind to a halt from there as that would be the only run the Conqs would score the remainder of the game. On top of that, they would get just three hits the remaining four innings. It was a different story for Butler as they scored 11 runs on 13 hits to roll to the 11-1 victory in five innings.
The bats improved in game two, but the pitching did not fare much better. The first started with an RBI double by
Spencer Marcus. As would be the story for much of the game, Butler answered in the bottom half tying the game up 1-1. In the third Dodge City would score two on an error, and a sacrifice fly by
Hector Carrillo. Butler would proceed to answer with two in third and another two runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead into the sixth inning. Dodge City had a good sixth inning. A single by
Trey Vasquez and two home runs by
Conner Kessler and Marcus scored four runs and lead 7-5. Butler scored three in the bottom half to take the lead for good. They would add one more in the eighth to take the 9-7 lead into the ninth inning. With two outs, the Conquistadors would string together a pair of doubles to score one run and have the tying run at second, but that is all they would get as Butler would hold on for the 9-8 win.
Game three did not start well for the Conqs and never really turned around. Already down 4-0 going into the bottom of the third the Conqs would score on a bunt single by
Drake Angeron. With one out and two on base, they would not score any more in the inning or the game. Butler added one in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the seventh to get the 10-1 victory.
In game four Butler started the game out up 2-0 going into the bottom of the third. Kessler singled to score two and Fritz followed with a run-scoring single of his own. Fritz would later score on a double by
Ryan Dos Santos to cap off the four-run inning. The 4-2 lead would not last long with Butler scoring two in the fourth, and two in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. That score would hold up until
Hector Carrillo singled in a run to cut the Grizzly lead to 6-5. The Conqs would tie it up in the bottom of the ninth on a base hit by Marcus. With one out in the bottom of the tenth Santos came up big with a triple. Unfortunately, he would be stranded there, and Butler would score what would be the winning run in the top of the eleventh. With the losses, it makes a Region VI tournament appearance for the Conqs unlikely, as they sit two games behind Pratt.
