(Colby, KS) -- The Dodge City Community College softball team played well but lost a tough extra inning game in the first game against Colby. They were able to rebound, however, winning game two rather easily, 13-7. The win paired with Seward losing both against Butler clinches the #3 seed in the upcoming Region VI softball tournament for the Conqs.
Early on in the first game, it was Colby who had the edge as they scored three runs right away in the first inning. The Conqs would respond in the second inning on the first home run of the season by
Samantha Montano, a two-run home run. Unfortunately, Colby would quickly answer with a two-run home run of their own to take a 5-2 lead going into the top of the fourth inning. The Conqs would tie the game after scoring a run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
Ericka Calderon singled,
Courtney Huff doubled, and
Jessica Espinoza singled to score those runs. Neither team would score in the seventh leading to the game going into extra innings. The Conqs started threatened in their half of the eight after Calderon and Espinoza had back-to-back one out singles. Both would wind up in scoring position with two out but they would not score. That was the last chance the Conquistadors would get as Colby ended it on a solo home run in the bottom half of the eight to end it 6-5.
Colby started off the second game with the scoring as well. They scored two in the first and two in the third to get out to a 4-2 lead going into the fourth with the Conqs scoring one in each of the second and third innings on an
Allie Hufford double, and Huff's sixth home run of the year. Dodge City would take control in the fourth innings, scoring eight runs to take a 10-4 lead. Espinoza singled, then Hufford scored on a fielder's choice. Huff hit a two-RBI single, then
Karissa Avila hit a three-run home run. Her first of the year made the score 9-4. Alex Pachecho would give the Conqs one more run on her third home run of the season. Pacheco hit her second homer of the day, another solo shot in the sixth making it 11-5. Pacheco would single in the sixth, scoring the twelfth run for the Conquistadors.
Gianna Browdy would add one more on a single. Colby added a run in each of the fifth and sixth, and two in the seventh but it would not be enough as the Conqs would win 13-7. Combined with Seward getting swept it would allow for the Conqs to clinch the #3 seed in the upcoming Region VI tournament to be played at their home ballpark in Dodge City, KS.
