(Dodge City, KS.) -- Despite the long break, the bats, and arms showed no rust in game one as the Conqs rolled to a 9-4 victory before everything went downhill in game two, losing 12-2 in eight innings in their home opener against Garden City Community College.
The first game started slowly offensively, as there was just one run scored in the first three innings of the game. That run was scored by the Conquistadors in the second inning on a
Blake Rast RBI single. Garden City would answer with a run of their own to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. It was the next half inning that would be the difference maker in the game. The Conqs exploded for six runs in the bottom half.
Ryan Armstrong got the party started with an RBI single. That would be followed by
Drake Angeron. With the bases loaded he unleashed on the ball for a bases-clearing double that would score Armstrong, Rast, and
Logan Murany.
Cameron Fritz would follow with an RBI base hit of his own. That six-run explosion would give Dodge City Community College a 7-1 lead. For good measure, the Conqs would add two more runs in the fifth inning on a double by
Spencer Marcus.
Luke Boline who had pitched a great first five innings, scuffled a bit in the sixth allowing three runs before
Joe Milano was called on to close out the game and give the Conquistadors the 9-4 victory in game one.
Four different players had multi-hit games for the Conqs in the first game. Angeron, Fritz, Rast, and Armstrong all had at least two hits on the day with Angeron driving in three runs.
Game two was a different story as the Broncbusters knocked around Conq starting pitcher
Jake Hewson to the tune of six earned runs in just 2/3 of an inning. From that point on the Conquistadors were never able to get close or pose a true threat. In the third inning
Garrett McGowan would blast a two-run home run but that was all the Dodge City offense would be able to produce in game two as Garden City would add another run in the fourth, three in the sixth, and two in the eighth to lead to the Conquistadors falling 12-2.
Garrett McGowan was able to erase his 0-3 with 3 K's in the first game by going 3-4 including the two-run bomb in game two.
These two teams will get right back at it tomorrow afternoon for another doubleheader. Those games will be played at Cavalier Field in Dodge City at 1:00 P.M., and 3:30 P.M.
