(Snyder, TX.) -- The Dodge City Community College Softball team started slowly on Friday but was able to bounce back on Sunday. On Friday, they lost both games to Western Texas. The first game was a heartbreaking 1-run loss in 8 innings. The second game was also by just one run, 12-11. Due to some inclement weather, they wound up having the day off on Saturday but got right back to it on Sunday. Sunday was a much better day for the team, as they were able to pull off the doubleheader sweep over Frank Phillips College with wins of 8-6, and 9-4.
In game one on Friday, Dodge City was able to start out strong with a run in each of the first two innings thanks to an RBI double by
Lexy Perez, and a Sacrifice fly by
Jessica Espinoza. The Conqs held the 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the 2
nd when Western Texas College was able to answer with 2 runs to tie it up. From there it was very uneventful with no runs being scored by either team until Dodge City in the top of the 8
th.
Courtney Huff hit a big triple to give the Conquistadors the lead; she also would wind up scoring on the next play to go into the bottom half with the Conqs leading 4-2. Unfortunately, with the Conqs up one an error would allow for two runs to score and the Westerners to come away with the victory.
Game two was much more eventful with lots of runs being scored. It did not start out well for the Conquistadors, however as the Westerners scored seven runs in the bottom of the first. However, big 2
nd, and 3
rd innings allowed for the Conqs to fight all the way back and take the lead.
Courtney Huff continued her big day with an RBI single to get thing rolling in the 2
nd. She would go on to score on a sacrifice bunt. An error by Western would allow two more runs to come home. The Conqs were not done there as the bats would continue to roll in the 3
rd. The first two runs of the third inning would score on a sacrifice fly and an error.
Jessica Espinoza then came up to the plate. Espinoza would knock in
Karissa Avila, connecting with an RBI double. On the next play, an error by the shortstop would allow two more runs to come in. Western Texas had an answer as they would score a run in each of the next 2 innings to tie the game up at 9.
Lexy Perez led off the 6
th for the Conqs and she got a hold of one and connected for a solo home run. The Westerners would respond with two runs in the bottom half. With the Conqs down to their last out, it was up to
Alex Pacheco. She delivered with an RBI single to tie up. Unfortunately, the Westerners would walk off in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single.
Sunday, the Conqs were able to bounce back by winning both games against Frank Phillips College. The Conquistadors were again, able to start out fast as they scored two runs in the 1
st inning on a double by
Gianna Browdy and an error. Frank Phillips College responded with one run in the bottom half but Dodge City, already leading 2-1 would explode for four runs in the 3
rd to take control of the game and coast the rest of the way. It did get a little bit tighter in the 6
th when the Westerners would score three times but DC3 held on for the 8-6 win.
In what has begun to be a theme on the season so far, in game two the Conqs got the bats going and scored early. DC3 scored in each of the first 3 innings. A run in the first off of a double by
Lexy Perez, and
Haley Bass scoring in the 2
nd inning off of an error made by the Plainsmen. The 3
rd inning saw the Conquistadors score three runs off a big double by Huff. In the 5
th inning, the Conqs would score another run. The sacrifice from Bass, allowed Sam Montano to score. At this point, Dodge City held a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the 5
th. The Plainsmen would get on the board, scoring three that half but Dodge City was well in control, adding 3 more insurance runs in the 7
th to help in closing out the doubleheader sweep 9-4.
Courtney Huff had a great weekend of games, picking up 7 hits in 15 at-bats and getting 5 RBI's.
With the cancellation of the McCook Community College games, Dodge City will not play again until March 4
th when they take on Frank Phillips College at home.
