(Dodge City, KS) – The Conquistador Men hosted the #5 Barton Cougars on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium in a thrilling game from start to finish. The Cougars came into Wednesday's match undefeated and having not surrendered a goal since August 28th! But the Conquistadors had other plans for the Cougars that day.
It looked as though the Cougars were going to control the entire game Wednesday having scored the first goal of the match just :43 seconds into the first half. The Cougars were playing fast and aggressive which seemed to catch the Conqs off-guard at the beginning of the match. The Conqs quickly re-grouped and never looked back. The score would remain 1-0 the entire first half with both the Conqs and Cougars spending considerable time on each side of the field with neither team gaining much of an advantage heading into the break other than the 1-0 score on the board. The Conqs took halftime to regroup in order to come out strong! The Conqs wasted no time in applying the pressure which resulted in their first goal of the match at the 49:00 mark on a goal from Freshman MF Rei Toyoda.
With the score now equal at 1-1, the Conqs looked to step on the gas and apply even more pressure. The go ahead goal came at the 53:00 mark on an incredible header from Freshman F Pablo Garcia Milan off a free kick from 30 yards out by Sophomore D Eduardo da Silva. Stunned for the first time this season, the Cougars tried to even the score many times in the following minutes but Sophomore GK Rafael Callegari stopped everything that came his way for the next 37 minutes! The next shock to the Cougars came at the 86:00 mark when Freshman MF Ryushiro Morita made his way around the Cougar defense and shot it in to give the Conqs a 3-1 lead with only four minutes to play in regulation. The Cougars quickly answered with a goal to bring them within one but couldn't find the equalizer before the clock hit 00:00.
The Conquistador Men are now 6-2-2 and 3-2-2 in the Jayhawk and sit in 3rd place in the West ahead of their final four games of the regular seson. The Conqs will travel to McPherson College on Sunday.
