Conqs End Season in Second Round of Playoffs

Box Score The Dodge City Community College men's soccer team was in unchartered water for the program as they stepped onto the pitch on Sunday afternoon. It was the first time the program had advanced to the second round of the Region VI Playoffs and they were just one step away from advancing to the district tournament in Texas.

The game did not start well for the Conqs as they looked a step slow like Friday's first round win might have taken some energy away from them. Barton was up to the task as they found the net just over three minutes into the game when Gabriel Arraes found the back of the net to put the Cougars up 1-0. The score seemed to wake the Conqs up as their defense stiffened and the first half became a defensive battle. The Conqs best chance of the first half came about mid way through the half when Anthony Bolivar was able to get a quality shot off, but the shot sailed just over the crossbar. The first half would end with the Cougars leading by that same 1-0 count.

The Conqs came out inspired after the halftime and definitely had a different level of energy. It took only a minute and 47 seconds for Dodge City to come back and even the game. Johnley Dezile took an assist from Santiago Hernandez and buried it in the back of the net to tie the game at one. The Conqs still had the momentum going in the second half but a misplayed ball just over five minutes into the half took some air out of their sails. Barton sent a cross into the box and when the Conq defense tried to clear it, they misplayed the ball into the net for an own goal. That put Barton up 2-1 and seemed to give the Cougars the momentum back. Both teams battled with opportunities over the next fifteen minutes of the game as it stayed with Barton leading by one. With just under 24 minutes remaining, the Cougars struck again. They got a scoring opportunity and the Conqs were called for an intentional hand ball in the box giving Barton a penalty kick. The Cougars capitalized on that opportunity, then struck again just over a minute later when they got a counter attack that caught the Conqs off guard. The two goals gave Barton a formidable 4-1 lead with 22:48 remaining in the game. The Conqs turned up the pressure offensively and had opportunities to score, but could not capitalize. Finally with just 1:07 remaining in the game, Bolivar got to a ball in the box and buried it in the net to bring the Conqs to within two. Time ran out on the Conqs though, and they were saddled with the 4-2 defeat.

The loss finishes the Conqs season. Their final record was 11-5-2 overall and 7-3-2 in Jayhawk West play.
