Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Despite holding the lead for most of the fourth quarter, the Conqs fell to Independence Community College on Saturday evening by a score of 32-28.
Sophomore
Caden Walters had 7 completions on 17 attempts while throwing for one touchdown which brings his season total to a career-high 11 touchdown passes.
The Conquistadors also had three running backs get at least 10 carries with
AJ Walker collecting 90 yards on 14 carries,
Tyler Minor collecting 83 yards on 18 carries and
Rodney Murphy having 12 carries and 81 yards.
Dodge City got things started in the first quarter scoring on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Walters to
Caleb Mills to give the Conqs a 7-0 lead with 9:35 left to play in the first quarter.
For the remainder of the first half, both defenses stepped up big, forcing punt after punt to head into the locker room with Dodge City leading 7-0.
The second half was a completely different story. Dodge City got the ball to start the second half, but after a punt, the Pirates were able to go 40 yards on four plays to tie the game at seven on a seven yard run from Rakeem Boyd.
After getting the ball back with 9:11 left in the third quarter, the Pirates were able to take the lead on an 84-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Bea to Markiese King to make the score, 14-7.
The very next possession, the Conqs were able to drive down the field and score on a four yard run by
Tyler Minor, but the point-after attempt was blocked, leaving the Conquistadors down one, 14-13.
After holding the Pirates to a three-and-out, a bad snap on a punt attempt turned the ball over on downs at the Indpendence 33 yard line. The Conqs then ran five plays, capped off by another four yard touchdown run from
Tyler Minor. After a successful two-point conversion, the Conqs led 21-14.
On the ensuing Independence possession, the Pirates went 75 yards on nine plays and finished it off with a 26 yard run, but the extra point was blocked to make the score 21-20 with 13:33 left in the game.
Trading punches offensively, the Conqs next possession was successful as they drove 49 yards in eight plays to score on a Murphy six yard run and extend their lead to eight, 28-20 with 9:34 left.
The Pirates would not go away, scoring on a 29 yard touchdown run. After going for two and being held, the Conqs still led 28-26 with 6:12 left in the game.
Murphy then took the kickoff 31 yards to being the Dodge City drive at their own 31 yard line. To begin the drive, the Conqs had a 10-yard run and an 11-yard run. On the third play of the drive, the conqs gained three yards on first down, but after the play, a penalty by the Conqs backed them up to second and 21. The Conqs eventually had to punt, giving the ball back to Independence with 2:21 left in the game.
Independence then went 55 yards on 7 plays to score a touchdown with just 34 seconds left in the game, giving the Pirates a 32-28 lead.
The Conqs had one last chance, but an incomplete pass on the final play of the game, ended the game, giving Independence the 32-28 win.
The Conqs now move to 3-3 on the year and will be in action again next weekend as they travel to Council Bluffs, Iowa to take on Iowa Western Community College at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 7.
