Conqs Hold On to Defeat Ellsworth, 36-30

Box Score IOWA FALLS, Iowa - After falling in week one, the Dodge City football team has now collected three straight wins as they held on to defeat Ellsworth Community College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 36-30.

After making it most of the way through the first quarter scoreless, the Conqs were able to get on the board after a pass from Caden Walters to Braxton Haley got the offense down to the one yard line and scored on a one yard run from AJ Walker.

Quickly after DC3 scored, the Panthers were able to connect on a big completion and put their first points on the board with a 34 yard field goal.

After holding the Ellworth offense, the Panthers missed a field goal to give the ball back to the Conqs who quickly scored on a long touchdown pass from Walters to Austin Watkins to make the score 12-3 after a failed two-point conversion.

Just 40 seconds into the second half, the Panthers struck on a 69 yard touchdown run to quickly cut the lead back to 12-10.

On the kickoff following the Ellsworth touchdown, DC3 was able to get a huge play of their own, as Rodney Murphy returned the kick 97 yards to extend the lead back to 19-10.

The Panthers were then able to collect back-to-back field goals to cut the lead to 19-16, but Dodge City recovered a punt that hit the Panthers on a punt and scored on the very next play to push the lead back to 26-16.

In the fourth quarter, the Conqs added to their lead with a 38 yard touchdown pass from Walters to Haley for the second time on the day extending the lead to 33-16.

Ellsworth would not go away quietly, scoring on a 23 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead back to 10, 33-23.

With 3:34 left in the game, the Conqs drove down the field and tacked on a field goal to make the score 36-23.

Again, as the game seemed out of reach, the Panthers quickly added a nine yard touchdown run and delivered on the extra point to make the score 36-30 with 1:24 left in the game.

Following their touchdown, the Panthers recovered an on-side kick and began their drive at the 50 yard line. After a fourth down completion to get a first down, Ellsworth had the ball at the Dodge City 19 yard line with 10 seconds remaining.

The Dodge City defense held strong as an incompletion by Ellsworth ended the game, giving the Conqs a 36-30 win.

The Conqs are now 3-1 on the year and will be in action again on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m., as they host Butler Community College.
