DODGE CITY, Kan. - Coming through once again in crunch time, the Dodge City Community College baseball team walked off with a 2-1 win before holding on for a 5-3 win to sweep Colby Community College on the final day of the 2017 regular season at Cavalier Field in Dodge City on Wednesday, May 3rd.
DC3 improves to 36-16-1 overall and 21-11 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Trojans fall to 27-23 overall and 18-14 in the KJCCC.
Colby's lone run of game one would come in the top of the first on a leadoff walk coming around to score on a sacrifice fly as the Conquistadors saw offensive struggles carry over from Tuesday. After being limited to just three hits in the first five innings of play, Dodge City would strand a game-tying run at third in the bottom of the sixth and needing at least one run in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game.
Richard Fullerton would strike out to lead off the bottom of the seventh before
Isaak Snyder and
Robert Perea would draw back-to-back walks to put the game-winning run aboard. Pinch-hitter
Sylman Pando would hit an infield single to load the bases before a
Cade Engle walk-off double would secure the No. 3 seed in the KJCCC West for the Conquistadors with a 2-1 victory.
Gavin Gifford would collect his second win of the year to improve to 2-0 on the year after throwing four scoreless innings while giving up three hits and issuing two walks.
Tommy Knowlton would get the start and throw the first three innings of the game while giving up one run on two hits and striking out two.
Engle's walk-off hit would be paired with two walks to be the only DC3 player to get on base three times in the game as the Conquistadors would be limited to a total of six hits.
Dauson Tate and
Richard Fullerton would be the only DC3 players to officially collect three at-bats in the game as Dodge City would draw a total of five walks in the game.
More runs would be scored in the first three innings of game four than the first three games of the series combined as DC3 would jump out to a 3-0 lead after one and never trail in the game.
Brayden Cook would hit a one-out double down the left field line before a
Jake Pederson RBI single put DC3 up 1-0 with
Talon Schaller and Tate keeping the hits going with two singles. Pando would then hit an RBI groundout to make the score 3-0 and give Dodge City their largest lead of the series.
Colby would break through in the top of the third with three runs on four hits to briefly tie the game at three, as DC3 would respond with Pederson lead off single before coming around to score on a Schaller sacrifice fly to put the Conquistadors back on top by a score of 4-3.
Pitching would settle back down to look like the way that things had gone in the previous three games of the series before Dodge City would add an insurance run on a Pederson single to score
Cole Bergdall in the bottom of the seventh and make the score 5-3 heading to the eighth.
A free pass and hit-by-pitch with one out led to Colby with the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the eighth when DC3 would turn to closer
Dalton Harvey who would strand the runners at second and third with two straight strikeouts following a double steal by the Trojans.
DC3 would get one hit in the bottom half of the eighth before three ground outs to the middle infield in top of the ninth gave DC3 their sixth KJCCC series win of the year.
Starter
Jonny Chavez improved to 4-0 on the mound this year after going five innings strong and allowing three runs on five hits and striking out four before turning the ball over to
Charlie Vizcaya. Vizcaya would pitch two and a third innings and not allow any hits before Harvey picked up his second save of the series and 11th of the season by throwing the final 1.2 innings of the game.
Pederson would lead DC3 with three hits in the game while Snyder would collect two as Cook's first-inning double would be Dodge City's only extra-base hit of the game. Pederson and Tate woudl each drive in two runs while Bergdall would draw the only Conquistador walk of the game.
With seedings and matchups now decided, Dodge City will play host to Coffeyville Community College in the opening round of the NJCAA Region VI Tournament this weekend. Dates and times for the best-of-three series will be determined on Thursday morning as DC3 will be the No. 5 overall seed in the 16-team tournament.
