PRATT, Kan. – Taking advantage of nine hits in each game, the Dodge City Community College softball team finally managed to get in their road doubleheader at Pratt after two consecutive postponements to win by scores of 9-0 and 9-1 on Friday, April 7th.
DC3 improves to 19-11 overall on the year and evens their Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference record at 7-7 overall while the Beavers fell to 4-38 overall and 2-12 in the KJCCC.
Both teams would struggle to find offense in the first two innings of game one before the Conquistadors would finally break through in the top of the third and take the lead for good. A
Cassie Overturf leadoff double to center field would allow for
Baylee Rial to sacrifice her over third on a bunt before a
Brittney Gonzalez RBI single would put the first run of the game on the board. Gonzalez would then steal second and third to allow for
Breanna Guerrero to walk and force a throw to Gonzalez at third where she would race home to make the score 2-0.
After holding PCC scoreless in the bottom of the third, DC3 would double their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth with
Kylie Fox and
Morgan Ihle each getting on base before
Sydni Odegard and
Brooklyn Botts would hit consecutive RBI sacrifice bunts to drive in a run each.
Another three runs would be pushed across in the top of the fifth by Dodge City, utilizing three hits with
Taylor Menard delivering the big hit with a two-RBI double to left field before a Fox double would drive home Menard.
With hopes to end the game early, DC3 did their sixth-inning damage with one out as Rial would hit a double to left before a Gonzalez triple would bring her around with the Pampa, Texas native eventually coming around to score on an error to make the score 9-0 and end the game an inning short of regulation.
Sophomore
Kim Herron (12-5) would toss a complete game shutout and allow just three hits while working around one hit batter and striking out six. Gonzalez and Menard each had two hits in the game with DC3 collecting a total of six of their nine-hits going for extra-bases.
The Conquistadors would do all of their scoring damage in the third and fourth innings in game two, as the first two innings would once again go scoreless. Botts would open the scoring with a leadoff line-drive home run to center field before a Rial one-out walk and Gonzalez single would put two runners on. Guererro would reach on a fielder's choice to lead the bases allowing for
Taylor Menard to hit an RBI sacrifice fly that would manage to bring home two runs on an error before Fox and Ihle would hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Having batted around in the inning, Dodge City would send Botts to the plate for the second time in the inning where she would cap off the scoring with an RBI single.
DC3 starting pitcher
Jordyn McDaniel would hold Pratt scoreless in the bottom of the third before the Conquistadors would tack on another three runs in the top of the fourth with Fox clearing the bases with a bases-loaded double and extend the Dodge City lead to 9-0 and threatening to end the game early.
PCC would scrape across a single run in the bottom of the fourth, and then load the bases in the bottom of the fifth with a chance to extend the game past five-innings but the Beavers would see a runner thrown out at home on a fielder's choice and leave three runners on to end the game.
McDaniel improved to 7-4 after throwing her second-consecutive complete game, allowing one run on six hits while striking out two. Fox's four runs batted in would go with a two-for-three day at the plate while Botts would drive in two runs and collect a hit in all three at-bats. Menard would collect a pair of RBI while Guerrero and Ihle each had an extra-base hit.
DC3 will get the opportunity for their second straight season series sweep in the KJCCC tomorrow afternoon when the Conquistadors play host to Garden City Community College with a 2 and 4 p.m. doubleheader at Legends Park. Earlier this year, Dodge City won by scores of 9-1 and 6-2 in Garden City.
