DODGE CITY, Kan. - Dodge City Community College sophomore
Talon Schaller hit for the cycle in the first four innings of game one against the Tabor College JV team as the Conquistadors swept a pair of seven-inning games by scores of 16-7 and 8-1 at Cavalier Field on Wednesday, April 12th.
DC3 now sits at 25-13-1 overall on the year and is 13-5-1 in non-conference games with two more non-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference games left on the schedule.
A pesky Bluejay team would prevent Dodge City from coming away with a shortened run-rule victory in game one as DC3 woudl take a 3-0 lead after one inning of play and lead by a score of 8-2 after two innings of work. Tabor would score four in the top of the third before DC3 would respond with three in the bottom of the frame and score five in the fourth to take a 16-6 lead. Tabor JV would add a single run in the top of the fifth to extend the game, which would go scoreless the rest of the way.
Schaller started off his quest for the cycle with a first-inning RBI triple to right center field and knocked out a two-RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the second. Having taken care of the hardest two feats of the cycle, Schaller would then hit his team-leading 11th home run of the year with a moon shot to left field to pick up his fourth and fifth runs batted in on the day and complete with a fourth-inning single.
Pitcher
Eric Lindsay would pick up his first win of the year after throwing 1.1 innings in relief and not allowing any hits while striking out one.
Gavin Gifford would start the game and throw the first two and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on five hits and striking out three while
J.T. Mossberg would throw the final three innings of the game and allow one run on three hits.
Dodge City would collect 17 hits in the game with Schaller's four-for-five day leading the way while
Dauson Tate and
Cade Engle each had three hits. Nine of the 17 hits would be extra-base hits as Tate would collect three doubles and drive in three.
Isaak Snyder would draw a season-high four walks in the game.
DC3 would do all of their scoring in game two in the second and third innings, putting up four runs in each inning while picking up seven of their nine hits in the two innings. Three consecutive RBI hits to left field would produce the four-run second as
Cole Bergdall along with Engle and Snyder would collect consecutive hits with two outs to give the Conquistadors a 4-1 lead after trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second.
Bergdall and Engle along with
Gideon Wells would put together the scoring in the bottom of the third as an
Eric Reid two-out single and
Sylman Pando walk would allow for Wells to collect an RBI single. Bergdall would hit an RBI double to left field before Bergdall would pick up RBI's three and four with a single to drive in Bergdall and Wells.
Robbie Watson improved to 1-1 on the year on the mound after throwing two scoreless innings in relief of
Jonny Chavez, who would go three innings and give up just a solo home-run while striking out four.
Charlie Vizcaya and
Dalton Harvey each worked one inning, striking out two batters each.
Engle ended up a perfect three-for-three at the plate with two doubles while Bergdall would manage two hits, score two runs, and drive in a pair of runs. Pando would nearly match Snyder's game-one performance by drawing three free passes.
More home baseball is in store for DC3 this weekend as the Conquistadors will play host to Pratt Community College for a four-game KJCCC series. Game one will get underway with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday as the series has been moved up to Friday and Saturday to avoid playing on Easter Sunday.
