DODGE CITY, Kan. - Needing extra innings in game one, the Dodge City Community College softball team saw the bats come alive in game two to complete a 2-1 (10 innings) and 16-0 (5 innings) sweep of Pratt Community College in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference action at Legends Field in Dodge City on Saturday, March 4th.
DC3 is now 11-5 on the season 2-2 in the KJCCC while the Beavers fell to 2-24 overall and 1-3 in the Jayhawk Conference.
A total of 24 runners on base would be stranded in game one as neither team could find a way to come up with a timely hit in the early innings to break the game open. The Beavers would put a runner on second in both the first and second innings before sophomore pitcher
Kim Herron would end the threats with strikeouts in both innings. Dodge City would go 1-2-3 in the first inning and plate one run in the bottom of the second as a two-out single by Herron would be followed up by a single by
Brooklyn Botts and RBI double by
Baylee Rial to give the Conquistadors a 1-0 lead. Herron would cruise through the third and fourth, striking out five over the two-inning span to put her total at nine through five innings while protecting the one-run lead for Dodge City. After leaving a runner on second in the bottom of the fifth, DC3 would see their one-run lead erased on a pair of two-out singles by Pratt to tie the game at one heading into the last inning and a half. The Conquistadors would go silent in their half of the sixth and force PCC to strand a runner on second, which would give Dodge City a chance to end the game in the seventh. Another 1-2-3 inning by DC3 would send the game to extra innings as the pitcher's duel continued with just two runs scored in regulation. Neither team would be able to push a run across in the eighth or ninth inning, putting the international tie-breaker rule into the 10th inning to help end game one. Herron would get a groundout and fielder's choice to get the Beaver runner at second and end the inning on a flyout before Bre Guerrero would reach base to lead off the bottom of the 10th on a hit by pitch. With runners on first and second,
Kylie Fox would sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third before
Brittney Gonzalez would end the game on a fielder's choice to score Rial.
Herron would go the full distance, throwing all 10 innings while striking out a season-high 14 and allowing just the one run. On the year, Herron is now 6-2 with 60 strikeouts and a 1.42 earned run average.
Game two would not take any time to see runs produced as Dodge City would put up five runs in the first before adding four in the second and fourth innings with three runs pushed across in the third. The first five Conquistador batters would reach base to start the bottom of the first as DC3 would bat around the lineup and collect extra-base hits by Fox, Gonzalez and Botts. Fox, Gonzalez, and Makayla Tegtmeir would pick up their second hits of the game in the bottom of the second before Herron would send one deep over the center field fence to put the exclamation point on a total of nine-runs being scored in the first two innings. With a new pitcher in the game for Pratt, Dodge City would waste no time adjusting by batting around for the second time in a single inning in the game to score three runs on five hits and two Beaver errors and hold a commanding 12-0 lead after three. Pratt would be fooled all game by Conquistador pitcher
Jordyn McDaniel, collecting just four hits in the game and only getting two runners in the game on second base. DC3 would add four in the fourth inning before ending the game via the run-rule in the fifth to get back to .500 in conference play after four games.
McDaniel's final stat line saw the freshman finish with five strikeouts and picking up her first collegiate shutout. Fox rebounded from a hitless game one to finish three-for-three at the plate in game two with three runs scored and two extra-base hits. Tegtmeier would also go perfect at the plate with a four-for-four day and a team-high three runs batted in.
A busy start to the week that sees the Conquistadors play six games in three days will get underway at 2 p.m. Monday when DC3 plays host to Frank Phillips College for a doubleheader at Legends Field. Earlier this year, Dodge City took a 10-1 victory over the Plainswomen in five innings as Herron would take a no-hitter into the seventh inning.
