DC3 Baseball Splits Day One At Barton

GREAT BEND, Kan. - A complete game-win by pitcher Tommy Knowlton in game one was overshadowed by a seven-inning loss as the Dodge City Community College baseball team managed to split (4-1 win, 17-1 loss) with Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference foe Barton Community College at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend, Kansas on Saturday, March 18th.

DC3 is now 16-6 overall on the season and 8-2 in the KJCCC while the Cougars lost for only the fifth time all year to fall to 19-5 and 4-2 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Knowlton was commanding in game one, facing just seven batters over the minimum while striking out six batters and allowing just one run. Two doubles would be all that DC3 would need in the top of the first to plate the first run of the game as Cade Engle would start the game with a double to right center before a two-out double by Dauson Tate would drive in Engle. Talon Schaller would start the top of the second with a single to left, allowing for Brayden Cook to hit a two-out RBI single to right field as Dodge City would double their lead to 2-0 after two innings. A pair of runs scored by a Schaller sacrifice fly and Robert Perea single in the third would put the score at 4-0 in favor of DC3, which would be more than enough run support for Knowlton. The Cougars would score their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, stringing together three of their five hits in the game to score just a single run. Dodge City would respond in the sixth and seventh by retiring the final six Barton batters in order with Knowlton striking out the side in the sixth.

Tate managed two hits in four at-bats for Dodge City in the win to finish as the only Conquistador with two hits in the game as seven of the nine DC3 batters would record a hit.

Big first and third innings by the Cougars in game two would supply 15 of their 17 runs as BCCC would put up seven runs in the bottom of the first to break the game open before adding a single run in the second and sixth innings while adding eight in the third. Dodge City would be limited to just five hits in the game, with their only run of the game coming on a Jonny Chavez one-out single in the top of the fourth. Game two would end up being a sloppy game defensively for both teams, as Dodge City (four) and
Barton (three) would combine for seven errors despite 14 of the 19 runs in the game being earned.

Charlie Vizcaya (2-2) would be one of five DC3 pitchers used in the game, taking the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) in the first inning. J.T. Mossberg (2.0 innings), Gavin Gifford (2.0 innings), Eric Lindsay (1.0 innings) and Robbie Watson (1.0 innings) would all see action on the rubber in relief throughout the game. Chavez would be the lone bright spot for Dodge City in the game on the offensive side of things, going two-for-three with one run batted in.

DC3 and Barton will close out their four-game conference series tomorrow at Lawson-Biggs field with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. in Great Bend. Through 10 conference games, DC3 leads the KJCCC West by one game over Hutchinson Community College.
