DODGE CITY, Kan. - Behind 16 innings of shutout baseball over two games, the Dodge City Community College baseball team picked up a 1-0 seven-inning win over Butler Community College before coming away with a 5-0 game two victory to sweep the first day of a four-game series at Cavalier Field in Dodge City on Saturday, March 11th.
DC3 has now won 11 straight games to improve to 14-4 overall and 6-0 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Grizzlies have now lost six straight games to fall to 9-11 overall. The Conquistadors have now won five of their last six meeting with BCC dating back to last year.
Only one run would be scored in the first game as DC3 would find a way to push across
Robert Perea on a
Brayden Cook sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning in what would amount to all the scoring that would be needed. Dodge City would be limited to only four hits in the game while stranding six runners on base. Butler Community College would not fare much better throughout the game, managing only five hits off of Conquistador starting pitcher
Tommy Knowlton (2-0) before being shut down by
Dalton Harvey (3 saves) in the seventh inning.
Sophomore
Talon Schaller would have the only extra-base hit of the game with a two-out ground-rule double down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth while Cook,
Dauson Tate, and Perea would record the other DC3 hits in the game.
Pitching would once again be the story in game two as starter
Charlie Vizcaya would allow just two hits over six innings of work to pick up his second win of the year while
Jeremy Hidalgo would not allow a single hit over the last three innings of the game to record his first save of the year. After cruising through the first five innings of the game which would see only four hits, Butler would start off the top of the sixth with a single up the middle before a fielder's choice with no out recorded saw the Grizzlies with runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt to the first baseman would move the runners to second and third, but Vizcaya would force back-to-back groundouts to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
Cade Engle would pick up one of his four hits in the game to get on with one-out in the bottom of the seventh before a throwing error on a fielder's choice by Cook would give DC3 runners on first and second.
Richard Fullerton would drive in the first run of the game with a single to right field before Schaller would open up the game with a two-out double down the left field line to score both Fullerton and Cook.
With Hidalgo on the mound, BCC would be retired in order in the seventh as the Conquistadors would only get a one-out single by
Jon Coss left on base. Butler would put a two-out runner on via a fielding error before a strikeout would end the minimal threat as DC3 kept Grizzly batters guessing all-day in the seasonally cold temperatures. With a relief pitcher in the game for BCC, Dodge City would take advantage with consecutive singles to start the bottom of the eighth inning before a Fullerton groundout and Tate walk would load the bases with one out. Schaller would drive in his third run of the game on a fielder's choice before
Jonny Chavez put the seal on the game with a two-RBI single to left field. Butler would get one last shot at a comeback, but would strand two runners to end the game.
Engle rebounded from his 0-2 game one by going four-for-four in game two and scoring two runs. Designated hitter
Jon Coss would be the only other Conquistador batter with multiple hits in the game, going two-for-three.
A chance to continue their winning streak and pick up a pair of conference wins will once again be in store for Dodge City on Sunday when the Conquistadors close out their four-game series with the Grizzlies with a two-game doubleheader at Cavalier Field starting at 1 p.m. DC3 will then take a week off for spring break before resuming action on March 18th.
