Box Score GREAT BEND, Kan. – Dodge City fell behind early in the first quarter and was unable to rebound from it, falling to Barton Community College on Wednesday evening by a score of 73-50.
Makaela Ewing was the Conquistadors' leading scorer on the day as she dropped 14 points for the second time this season, while also grabbing four rebounds. Alec Fitts was the second leading scorer for Dodge City, scoring nine points on the day.
The Conqs got off to a slow start in the first quarter, scoring their first basket with 6:50 to play in the quarter. Barton was able to extend their lead to 11-4, but Kaylee Dale was able to pull down a big offensive rebound and keep the possession alive. Dale then found Kyra Trice at the free throw line who knocked down the jumper, cutting the lead to 11-6 with 3:01 left.
With less than two minutes to play, Mallory Miller knocked down six free throws to push the lead to 19-7. Dodge City was able to collect a basket from Makaela Ewing, but the Cougars were able to hit one free throw to keep the lead at 20-9 heading into the second quarter.
The Lady Cougars came out firing in the second quarter as they extended their lead to 27-11 in the first two minutes, forcing Dodge City to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, both offenses went cold, each scoring one basket until Trice finished a layup with 4:19 left in the half.
After Barton extended their lead to 20 with just under a minute to play, Allie Baker missed a shot at the buzzer, heading into the locker room with the Conqs trailing, 36-16.
To start the second quarter, the Lady Cougars extended the lead to 22, but a free throw by Rowley and a wide-open three from Taylor Lee quickly cut the lead back to 18. A three-pointer gave Barton their largest lead of the game at 23, but Alec Fitts answered with a three of her own at the other end to bring it back to 20.
Ewing and Baker then connected on back-to-back baskets forcing the Lady Cougars to call their first timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Barton was able to find their rhythm, quickly pushing the lead back to 25 with 2:00 to play. After the Lady Cougars pushed the lead to 29, the Conqs finished the quarter on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 62-41.
The Conqs could not get anything to drop to start the third quarter as Barton went on a 4-0 run in the first three minutes to extend the lead to 66-41 before Ewing knocked down a jumper from the short corner to make it 66-43.
Barton did not let up for the remainder of the game, extending the lead to 75-52 before the final buzzer.
The Conqs move to 4-6 overall on the year and 2-6 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Saturday as they host Cowley College at 1:00 p.m., inside the Student Activity Center.
