DODGE CITY, Kan. – Scoring the first four points of the game, the Dodge City Community College would see their last lead come at the 1:52 mark of the first quarter before falling behind and never being able to close the gap in a 64-55 home loss to Allen County Community College at the Student Activities Center in Dodge City on Wednesday, January 4
.
DC3 is now 3-11 on the year and 3-7 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Lady Red Devils improved to 5-9 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
The Conquistadors would open the scoring on buckets by
Alexus Johnson and
Dasia Johnson en route to taking an 8-2 lead midway through the first quarter. Allen would close the opening period on an 8-0 run to take a 10-8 lead after one quarter of action.
A dreadful two-for-19 performance from the field in the second quarter would see Dodge City score just six points as Allen would connect on eight of their 19 attempts to outscore DC3 18-6 in the quarter and double up the Conqs at halftime by a score of 28-14.
Needing to close the gap in the third quarter, the Conquistadors would be unable to do so as the Lady Red Devils would score the first six points of the half to take their largest lead of the game with 7:53 remaining in the third. Dodge City would not any closer than 14 points in the quarter, trailing 47-31 heading into the final frame.
The Conqs would work their way back to cut the lead to single digits on four separate occasions in the fourth, but Allen County would respond each time with a basket of their own to re-open double-digit leads and never give DC3 a chance to build on momentum and hang on for the 11-point victory.
"We were our own worst enemy tonight and we didn't put ourselves in a position to win tonight" said head coach
Zach Loll in a post-game interview. "Tonight is a night where we didn't shoot the ball well, but we didn't do the things that we can control well enough to give ourselves a chance." "Allen does a nice job of taking the paint away and forcing you to become a jump shooting team, which hurt us tonight."
Field goal percentage would not be the only issue tonight for DC3 as the Conquistadors would finish just seven-of-16 (43.8%) from the charity stripe and get out-rebounded 58-44. The difference in the game would end up being second-chance points with Allen outscoring Dodge City 15-2 in that area in addition to a 40-20 points in the paint advantage.
Alexus Johnson led all scorers with 24 points and added eight rebounds while
Cardelia Allen pulled in eight rebounds and had two steals.
Taylor Nichols and
Jakyia Chambers would each have nine points for Dodge City. Allen was led by 17 points from Damonica Franklin.
Another key KJCCC game awaits Dodge City on Saturday when they travel to Independence to take on the Lady Pirates at 4 p.m.
