DODGE CITY, Kan. – The hangover effect was in full force on Saturday as the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team, coming off a two overtime thriller Wednesday night at Cloud County, dropped a 100-89 decision to Pratt Community College in the Student Activities Center in Dodge City on Saturday, Jan. 21.
With the stunning loss, Dodge City now sits at 13-6 overall and 10-5 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while Pratt improved to 5-13 overall and 3-12 in the KJCCC.
A back-and-forth opening five minutes would see five lead changes among the two teams before Dodge City would re-take the lead at the 14:40 mark while going on a 16-1 run over the next three minutes to open up a 22-12 lead. DC3 would maintain their lead around eight for the next four minutes before Pratt would go on a 6-0 run to get back within three at 28-25. The Conquistadors would see the Beavers cut the lead to one on two separate occasions before two Dominique Bell free throws would give Pratt the lead with 3:43 before intermission. Offensive struggles would see the Conqs score just four points, all from
Kourtney Ware, down the stretch to fall into a 47-42 hole at halftime.
Things would get quick-paced and chippy in the second half as Pratt would build a double-digit lead at 60-50 at the 15:55 mark left in the game. Dodge City would try to cut the lead back to single-digits, but would be responded to each time with baskets by Pratt as the Beavers would maintain their double-digit lead over the next six minutes of play. DC3 would get as close as three points with 7:45 left in the second half, but Pratt would score seven of the next nine points to get some breathing room and keep the Conquistadors at arm's length. A two-minute scoring drought would allow Pratt to go on a 7-0 run to put the lead at 94-81 with 3:24 left in the game as the Conqs would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Efficiency would see Pratt finish 36-61 (59.0%) from the floor and 50 percent (5-10) from beyond the arc while DC3 finished just 34-74 (45.9%) and six of 23 from deep (26.1%). Dodge City would edge the Beavers 38-37 on the glass as each team would score 52 points in the paint. The Conquistadors would get 16 points on 17 offensive rebounds, but would be outscored 35-27 in bench points.
Josh Boutte grabbed 15 rebounds to move into third on the all-time rebounding charts moving past Tyshon Pickett who played from 2010-12. Boutte, who also scored 23 points in the game, now has 542 career rebounds at Dodge City and trails only Charlie Coley (581 rebounds) and Larry Dassie (1,291 rebounds).
Trey Grundy III would score a season-high 15 points and pull in six boards while
Kourtney Ware had 10 points. Pratt was led by a game-high 31 points from Devon Andrews who also tallied nine rebounds, three assists, and three blocks.
Another chance to be road warriors will await Dodge City on Wednesday when the Conquistadors will travel to Coffeyville to take on the Red Ravens in a crucial KJCCC contest. Coffeyville is 1.5 games back of Dodge City for third heading into Saturday night's contest at Independence and currently holds the tie-breaker over DC3 after beating the Conquistadors 93-83 earlier this year.
