Box Score CONCORDIA, Kan. - The Dodge City Community College men's soccer team could not convert on their limited opportunities as a goal right before intermission gave Cloud County a 1-0 win over the Conquistadors in Kansas Jayhawk Community College play on Tuesday, September 20th.
DC3 remains winless on the year at 0-5-2 and 0-3-1 in KJCCC play while the No. 19-ranked Thunderbirds improved to 6-0-1 on the year and 4-0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference.
A wide open first half saw both teams utilize the entire field as both the Conqs and T-Birds played up and down with neither team truly controlling possession. After DC3 would have a couple of opportunities thwarted by the Cloud County goalie, a defensive breakdown just outside of the box allowed for the ball to sent across the box to an open Reda Chakof who would put it past goalie
Eric Edge to put the Thunderbirds up 1-0. The final 12 minutes of the half would play out without any other opportunities, giving CCCC a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the pace would slow down slightly with the opportunities again limited for both squads. DC3 would have a breakaway shot saved by the Thunderbird goalie in what would be their best chance of the game. The Conqs best other opportunity to find an equalizer would come when Edge would punt one down the field and force the Cloud County goalie to send the ball over the net off of one bounce. On the ensuing corner kick, Cloud County would clear the ball out without giving DC3 a shot. No other real opportunities presented themselves in the game, as the Thunderbirds would control possession for the rest of the game.
"We played a much better second half than our first, and we had much more pace and simpler touch on a tough surface" said head coach
Tim Romanello in a post-game interview. "We were creating chances, just not converting in front of goal. Instead of being up being up 2-0 on two point-blank chances, we just didnt convert and that becomes the difference."
Dodge City will close out their three-game road trip with a 7 p.m. match at Garden City on Saturday, September 24th. The Broncbusters are 7-4 overall on the year and 1-2 in KJCCC play heading into a Wednesday match at Pratt.
