Volleyball Wins Twice at Home Triangular

DODGE CITY, Kan. - Playing a little Monday afternoon volleyball in front of their home crowd, the Dodge City Community College volleyball team swept a pair of matches over the Kansas Wesleyan JV and Seminole State College at the DC3 Gymnasium on Monday, September 12th.

The Conquistadors are now 6-4 on the season after earning the two non-conference wins.

In the first match against the Kansas Wesleyan JV team, DC3 started out slow in both sets but was able to rebound nicely and come away with the sweep by scores of 25-12 and 25-13. Down 5-3 in set one, the Conqs fought their way back to tie it at five and then again at eight after falling behind 8-6. Up 14-11, the Conquistadors would reel off seven straight points to take a commanding lead before closing out the set by winning three straight points. The second set looked a lot like the first as Dodge City would give up the first three points to the Coyotes before clawing theri way back. After tying the score at six, DC3 took its lead of the match at 9-8 and never looked back, going on another 7-0 run to go up 21-11 and force a KWU JV timeout. After giving up two of the next three points to the Coyotes, DC3 would end the match with three straight points to pick up their fifth victory of the season.

Sophomore Daisy Cheek had four kills to go along with 10 assists in the match while Sada Smith would lead the Conquistadors with eight kills. Raquel Valdez would add three solo blocks in addition to one block assist for DC3, who hit .260 for the match.

The second match against Seminole State proved to be a bit tougher, but the Conqs fought their way back in the first set 27-25 before making a statement in the second set 25-14 and closing out the match in the third set 25-20 to sweep the Trojans. After falling behind 17-13 midway through the first set, a well-timed timeout called by head coach Kamri Nehls seemed to be just the spark that the Conqs needed. DC3 would fight their way back to tie the match at 20 apiece before again falling behind 24-22 which forced Nehls to use her last time out. Dodge City resonded with three straight points of their own to force extra volleyball before stringing together two straight points to take the set 27-25.

In the second set, the Conquistadors wanted to make a statement and did just that by taking the set 25-14 after jumping out to leads of 7-3 and 17-5. The third set would appear to start out the same as the second set, but Seminole State would close the gap before eventually running out of gas and giving the Conqs their second sweep of the day.

Sada Smith paced the Conquistadors with 10 kills and 15 digs in the match while Cheek added seven kills in the match.

DC3 returns to KJCCC action on Wednesday against Nationally-Ranked No. 20 Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Dragons are leading the KJCCC with a 3-0 conference record.
