Box Score GREAT BEND, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team cut a double-digit deficit to a single possession in the final minute, but ran out of time during a 62-57 loss to Barton on Saturday.
The Conquistadors (16-9, 6-8), who have lost four straight, quickly turned a 23-21 halftime deficit into a two-point lead in the opening minute of the third quarter on a pair of
Rachel Slattery free throws and a
Kyra Fennell basket.
However, Barton (13-13, 5-10) went on a 22-4 run over the next six minutes to increase their lead to 45-29 with 1:50 left in the third.
The Conqs trailed by double figures at 52-42 with 6:42 remaining in the game before slowly chipping away at the Cougars' lead. A pair of
Antania Newton free throws with 3:53 left cut the Barton advantage to 53-48.
But the Conqs, who beat Barton in the teams' first meeting in Dodge City, wouldn't get any closer until the final minute and cut it to three at 60-57 with a Newton 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining before Barton's Dominique Baker put it away with a pair of free throws with three seconds left.
Newton paced the Conqs with 18 points, including going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Alexus Johnson had 14 points and three assists while
Rachel Slattery had 12 points, 23 rebounds and two steals.
Alexus Bryson had 15 points and eight steals to lead Barton while Baker and Jalisa Jones had 13 points apiece.
The Conqs shot 30.6 percent from the field (19 of 62) and only 54.2 percent from the free-throw line (13 of 24). They also had 18 turnovers, though DC3 did outrebound Barton 47-39.
DC3 returns to action 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Garden City.
