RECENT SERIES HISTORY

- DC3 has won all three contests against Independence since head coach Gary Thomas arrived prior to the 2013 season.
- The Conquistadors beat Independence 42-32 last season in Independence, Kan.
- DC3 last lost to Independence on Sept. 29, 2012 – a 42-14 defeat in Dodge City.

 

PREVIOUS GAME

- DC3 is coming off a 40-35 victory over rival Garden City on the road Saturday to move to 2-0 on the season.
- Independence lost to Iowa Central at home 37-34 in overtime Saturday to drop to 0-2.

 

QUICK HITS

- The minus-75 yards rushing allowed by the DC3 defense last week in a win over Garden City set a school record. The previous record for single-game rushing yards allowed was 27 set in 2001 against this week's opponent, Independence.
- The Conquistadors are first in the nation in two categories in this young season – punt return average (30.7) and defensive touchdowns (three). Two of those defensive touchdowns came last week during a stretch where DC3 scored three touchdowns without its offense being on the field (a kickoff return for a TD and two defensive TDs).
- The DC3 defense also ranks in the top five in the NJCAA in interceptions (five – fifth in the NJCAA), fumbles recovered (four – fourth in the NJCAA) and sacks (16 – tied for first in the NJCAA).
- DC3 moved into the NJCAA Top 20 this week at No. 20 – the first time the Conquistadors have been in the Top 20 since the first poll of the 2014 season. It was the final of 11 straight NJCAA rankings DC3 had been in the polls.
- Florida commit and DC3 sophomore running back Mark Thompson is fourth in the country with 252 rushing yards and fifth in yard per game at 126.0.
- DC3 freshman Marquice Flowers is making a quick impact in the return game. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native has returned three kickoffs for 116 yards (38.7 yards per return) and a touchdown and he's returned two punts for 96 yards (48.0 ypr) and a, touchdown. He's the only player in the country to return both a kickoff and a punt for a score this season.
