Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- In a matter of seven minutes, the Dodge City Community College men's soccer team dug itself a 2-0 hole early in the second half against Northwest Kansas Tech.
The Conquistadors came back to life when
Shawn Watson scored in the 73rd minute, however, DC3 couldn't find the equalizer and lost 2-1 to the Mavericks on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium in a physical matchup.
There were 33 fouls and four yellow cards handed out between the two teams. DC3 coach
Tim Romanello said his team needs to find a way to be more focused in physical contests such as this.
"Our biggest enemy is us," Romanello said. "We worry about the things we can't control. That's the hard thing about this game. It is always about the things we can't control we worry about and the things we can control, we don't care enough about."
The two teams played a scoreless first 45 minutes before a controversial call set up the first goal for Northwest Kansas Tech (7-6-1 overall) 13 minutes into the second half. DC3 goalkeeper
Sebastian Bolivar, who had entered the game just nine minutes before for an injured
Luis Torres, cleared a ball heading out of bounds touched last by the Conqs (6-6-2) toward the sideline to keep the Mavericks from getting a corner kick.
However, the referees deemed the ball already had gone out of bounds and awarded Northwest Kansas Tech a corner, a call many Conqs disagreed with.
On the ensuing corner, the ball got loose in front of the goal box before Matt Camacho punched it in to make it 1-0 Mavericks in the 58th minute.
Northwest Kansas Tech scored again seven minutes later on another set piece to push the lead to 2-0 before Watson answered in the 73rd minute to cut the Mavericks lead to 2-1. But it wasn't enough as DC3 couldn't find the game-tying goal in the final 17 minutes in this non-KJCCC matchup.
The Conqs finished with nine shots - four on goal.
Bokkar Ka had a team-high three shots with two on goal.
Torres played the first 49 minutes of the contest at keeper for the Conqs and stopped all six shots he faced.
DC3 returns to conference play when it travels to face Kansas City Kansas Community College 8 p.m. Friday.
