Box Score DODGE CITY, Kansas: It was a high-intensity kind of day from the first whistle today at Memorial Stadium as Dodge City men's soccer fell 3-2 in overtime to Barton Community College in the first round of the NJCAA Region VI Tournament.
Both teams came out strong from the beginning and were evenly matched throughout.
Throughout the match, the Conqs posted 17 shots, nine of which were on goal while the opposition was good four 15 shots, eight of which challenged Conq goalie
Alex Rodela.
Rodela had an epic game today, despite the loss. In 99:27 minutes of work, he posted five big saves that helped DC3 extend the game into extra time, including one in overtime early on.
DC3 scored first on the day in the 19
th minute of play.
Mauro Hipolito passed up to
Ben Carter who took a touch and scored left of the goalie to put the Conqs up 1-0 and add momentum to the offense.
Barton's offense picked up as well however as in the 36
th and 37
th minute, they picked up back-to-back goals to go up 2-0 in the first half.
With 45 seconds left in the first half, the Conqs worked hard in front of Barton's goal and were tagged in penalty range.
Adrian Torres took the honors for DC3 and ripped the ball straight over the BCC goalie to even the score.
Despite one shot by Barton and 10 by the Conqs in the second, neither team scored which put the match through to extra time.
In the 96
th minute, an unfortunate foul put the ball about 20 yards out directly in front of the Conq goal, but the Cougar put in a little too much extra effort, sailing the ball over the goal and providing the Conqs with more opportunity to snag the win.
Unfortunately a goal with 33 seconds left on the clock would end things for the Conqs, putting their 2014 record at 11-5-2 overall.
Ben Carter was 4-5 on the day with one goal while
Ross Rodgers posted a 1-4 outing.
Evan Williams managed two shots as well as a big defensive day for the Conqs while
Cristian Verduzco,
Adrian Torres,
Rene Rodriguez and
Shawn Watson each had one shot apiece.
