Box Score DODGE CITY, Kansas: Conquistador men's soccer advanced to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference after a 2-1 victory over Pratt Community College at home tonight.
It was a cold and drizzly night, but the Conqs kept the fire lit throughout 90 minutes of strong play to overcome the opposition and come away with the big conference victory.
"I thought our energy and intensity in the first 30 minutes was terrific," stated head coach
Tim Romanello. "We played quickly, we were sharp, we took chances at goal, we gave Pratt a whole lot of trouble."
The Conqs posted five shots in the first half compared to the Beavers seven, while the Conqs put four on goal and Pratt only posted three against DC3 goalkeeper
Alex Rodela.
The first goal of the day came in the 21
st minute when both
Shemuel Wilson and
Mauro Hipolito connected, feeding the ball up to
Ben Carter who snagged his fourth goal of the 2014 campaign. Carter now leads the team with 13 points after posting four goals and five assists on the season.
The Conqs almost had another goal less than two minutes later when Wilson worked hard for an opening, but was called offside, causing the goal to be taken off the board.
As a result, the half closed out 1-0 with the Conqs leading. Things kicked off after the break with both sides coming out hard, but not as organized as the first.
Pratt evened things up in the 64
th minute of the match with a touch past the defensive line and Rodela pulling from the goal, causing an opening for the Beavers to score.
"We were a bit anxious after the break and it allowed Pratt to control a bit more of the play then I would have rather liked, and even though we gave up a goal, we settled down and got after it again," continued Romanello.
With the clock winding down, the DC3s Wilson picked up the ball yet again 15 yards out from the goal. He passed over to
Ross Rodgers who took a few touches and ripped the ball through to the right side of the goal to put the Conqs up 2-1 with roughly ten minutes left to play.
"Ross hit a peach of a goal," commented Romanello. "We put in a lot of work at training, and to see things work themselves out I the game, executed, you just have to nod your head to the guys for getting it done."
On the day, the Conqs outshot the Beavers 16-10 with 11 of their shots coming in the second half. DC3 posted eight shots on goal for a .500 shot on goal percentage as a team.
Rodela put up four saves and allowed just the one goal throughout his 90 minutes of work.
"It's time to move on to the next opponent and keep building," finished Romanello.
The Conqs will continue KJCCC play on this Sunday, October 12 at 4 p.m. at home at Memorial Stadium.
